MEET LIBBY URNER WENNSTROM

Why am I running for City Council?
After 23 years in Port Townsend, I’ve frequently seen our community’s willingness to pitch in and make things happen.  As a longtime community leader, I’ve often been a part of this effort, from organizing free mask giveaway events for the schools to managing our volunteer Search and Rescue.  I’ve served on a wide variety of teams doing all kinds of projects, and I’m good at bringing people together and helping them find common ground.
Local politics matter; having a solid understanding of  both our unique opportunities and our very real challenges can help us 'get it right' when setting City policy. I chose to raise my family here because I cared deeply about this place; now it's my turn to help do the work of keeping Port Townsend a place we all want to live.

What makes me stand out as a candidate?
I've lived and worked here for many years, and have worn a variety of hats - as director of the Farmer's Market, as volunteer coordinator for the Wooden Boat Foundation and Jefferson Land Trust, and as a reporter for The Leader. I've had plenty of practice getting to know people across a broad cross-section of our community, and I think that will help me do a good job representing us on the City Council. I'm also organized, dependable and able to get things done. Democracy is difficult, slow and often messy work, and I promise to show up.

What are some issues I would like to address if elected?
As a former single mom juggling part-time jobs, I know how hard it can be to make a living here. I’ve seen too many families move away, and too many cooks or nurses working doubles because new staff can’t find housing.  Can our community craft housing solutions that work for everyone? I can’t promise easy answers, but I know enough about how our city works to ask good questions, and I’m skilled at breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces.

Good governance means balancing priorities and making intentional choices. Everyone wants new library books, a better pool and fewer potholes. We’ve all got opinions about deer. Local policy matters; the actions we take today will shape how well the city we love works for our grandchildren.  I’ve got the skills and leadership experience we need, and I’d be honored to represent you on the City Council.

What's something I want the voters to know about me?
I'm good at getting things done, at helping diverse groups of people work together effectively, and at listening to all stakeholders when considering a decision.  I can also sew amazing costumes, and my dog is really cute.
